The Clayton County Public Schools Data Center Modifications project involved the complete renovation of an existing and functional data center. The data center was to remain operational during the entire renovation as the county school system relied upon the data center for daily operations. The project involved the installation of a complete APC ISX solution including: replacement of IT/Server cabinets, a new 250kW UPS unit, two (2) 150kW PDU’s, three (3) new 30ton computer room A/C units, new 600A data center electrical service, new 600A service rated automatic transfer switch, a new 400kW natural gas powered Standby Power Generator (SPG) unit and the replacement of the existing power company transformer. During the course of the installation a temporary generator unit was brought in to support the data center in the interim of the new generator unit delivery. A new Georgia Power Co transformer was brought in to replace the existing transformer that would be undersized for the data center after the modifications project. The project required close coordination with the data center manager to schedule the replacement of existing power and cooling equipment with new equipment. The project presented challenges in terms of scheduling coordination of equipment installation but ultimately the project was completed without any unscheduled disruption to data center operations.
